Dearly beloved, this has not been a good week. After a long life of service, and following a lingering illness, our AC motor passed away yesterday. And it’s August. In coastal South Carolina.
The motor’s been on life support for a while now, but my husband – master of the jerry-rig – thought we might be able to nurse it through the rest of the summer. He tried all sorts of clever tricks, and some of them actually worked. The fan had been shutting off arbitrarily, and we’d gotten in the habit of banging it back into action – Jeff with a grill accessory, me with the end of a dust mop – several times a day, to decent effect. Still, we knew it was only a temporary tactic, not a long-term strategy – that those halcyon days would eventually come to an end. We’d just hoped it would happen in late October or so, giving us at least until April to come off the cash for a new AC motor. We really need a whole new “unit” (gosh, I hate that word!), but we’re being realistic here. We can conceivably scrounge up $600, but $6,000 might as well be $6,000,000.
Welcome to life in the “Creative Class.” You get to meet fascinating people, attend wonderful events, do the work you were born and educated to do, and genuinely love your work. But you can’t afford to live in the world.
I’m not whining – I know how good I’ve got it. Some of you hate your jobs – or your spouses hate theirs. I know that. But you’re currently kicking back in a cool house. And you’re probably not wracked with Mom Guilt. Everything’s a trade-off. Just sayin’…

Oh, Margaret, I am so sorry. You must have a wake. I know you and I have been nursing both of our AC’s through several summers. Lots of care and loving attention, mostly involving the water hose and banging odd items on them. Poor things. They have done the best they could. May it RIP.. Ours is not far behind. Good luck, darling!

So true, sis. We’ve had this chat many a time, but considering I’ve lived both lives pretty recently, I can honestly say that I miss what you have (what I had). Our AC is held together with duct tape, too, and hopefully will get us through the rest of the summer. Even with a paycheck every 2 weeks, I’m not sure how we’d swing a new “unit”.
